Illustrations With Depth

While developing a storytelling method for my documentary film, Jojo’s Circus, there was a glaring absence. The footage captured at sea did not include the most harrowing experiences. I wanted to create a visual framework that would expound the family’s interviews. I began to sketch and imagine the experiences the family had. In the end, I decided on watercolor set into a three dimensional space.

The use of watercolor to illustrator the scenes of Jojo’s Circus was the right choice for two main reasons; the journey took place in water, and the medium creates a storybook aesthetic. To me, watercolor felt imaginative and dreamy. As I created diorama-like scenes, I captured the illustrations through a combination of video, stop motion and sequenced Images.
